The challenge of producing vegetables during the cold, winter months in Indiana is what inspired husband and wife duo, Ryan and Kim Schleman, owners of the family-owned and operated farm, Freedom Foods, LLC, in Wolcott, located about 20 miles north of Lafayette, to become entrepreneurs.
“We wanted to be able to work together as a family and have something to pass down to our children,” said Schleman. “It’s a lot of hard work and it’s not easy, but it’s gratifying.” In fact, Ryan Schleman says he began growing his own garden from the time he was six years old each summer at his grandparent’s house.
As a local business, the Schleman’s say they believe that’s what people want: to support a locally-owned business and know exactly where their products are coming from. But their biggest challenge? “Advertising and connecting with the right audience for your product.”
In the near future, the Schleman’s say they plan to put up a fourth greenhouse to help increase winter production.
