Joe's Movie Picks, January 24, 2015

Hello there, Indiana Originals! It's January, and the Hoosier State has plenty of upcoming movie-themed events throughout the year, and you all should know what's going on. The Indiana Convention Center will be hopping with cosplayers dressed as wizards, costumed heroes and villains, and many other convention goers as Indy continues to be a pop-culture convention powerhouse. The convention scene will be topped off by the first-ever Wizard World Indianapolis Comic Con February 13-15. Wizard World is one of the bigger names in comic conventions and always has a star-studded lineup of celebrities. Check out this lineup: William Shatner, Liam McIntyre (of "Spartacus: War of the Damned"), the WWE's Bella Twins, and about half of the cast of "The Walking Dead": Michael Cudlitz (Abraham), Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha), Emily Kinney (Beth),  Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon), and Indy native Andrew J. West (Gareth). Also in attendance will be names like Lou Ferrigno and Jake Lloyd (who played young Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode I"). Just a month later, the Indiana Comic Con will rock Indy, bringing Jason Momoa, who will be playing Aquaman in the upcoming slate of DC Comics movies, along with Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia from "Star Wars"). Also, last year's Indy Pop Con was a rousing success, and festival organizers announced it would be returning to Indy in 2015, June 26-28. And of course GenCon Indy will again descend upon the Circle City in August. Yet to be determined is whether or not Awesome Con, which was a bit of a letdown in Indy last fall, will return. Also, if you're looking for something a little lower-key, Redemption Aleworks (7035 E. 96th St) will be hosting "Movie Mondays," with weekly movie-themed drinks and specials along with a movie chosen by Film Yap writer Joshua Hull. You may also see other Film Yappers there from time to time, including possibly yours truly, so stop in and say hello! Be sure to hit this local establishment up for some good cinema and good food and drink! And finally, be sure to check out The Film Yap (www.thefilmyap.com) for the latest and greatest in movie coverage and commentary! We are in the midst of our second site redesign, so before long you'll be seeing a brand-new Film Yap look, with the same great content, and maybe even a few new extra surprises! filmyap_logo_red_textJoe Shearer of The Film YapAbout Joe: Joe Shearer is the co-owner of The Film Yap, a collection of Central Indiana’s Premier Film Geeks.
