Joe's Movie Picks-July 9

Hey there! This is Joe Shearer of The Film Yap with this week's look at what's new at the movies. The big movie news 'round these parts this week was the special "First Look" of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie. 17 minutes of footage from the film was screened at the Hamilton 16 IMAX and the AMC Showplace 17 IMAX. I was at the Noblesville screening and have a full report describing the footage at The Film Yap. The film looks spectacular and promises a new spin on the superhero genre in a universe that includes our favorites from "The Avengers." Look for this film to tie in with Marvel's existing flicks and creating a true "Marvel Universe." And I know what you're thinking...head over to a movie theater in NOBLESVILLE for 17 minutes of a movie? Well, we also scored a SWEET exclusive mini poster. Check it out: Guardians of the Galaxy First Look IMAX poster   "Guardians" hits theaters August 1. Hitting big screens this week is "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the sequel to the surprisingly good reboot of the franchise from 2011. This film takes place a decade after the first, and the apes have firmly established themselves as a threat to the food chain as humanity dies off from a mysterious disease. To help bridge the gap between the two films, 20th Century Fox also released three short films showing what has happened between the films. You can watch those films here. Also opening is the Roger Ebert documentary "Life Itself," which The Yap's Christopher Lloyd awarded a rare 5 out of 5 Yaps. The movie is getting some good publicity, and this in-depth look at the world's most famous movie critic is even getting a little Oscar buzz. Other movies opening this week include "Ida" and "Third Person," the latest from writer/director Paul Haggis (who also wrote and directed "Crash," the worst Best Picture winner in the history of the Academy Awards). Speaking of Chris Lloyd, did you know he appears on WISH-TV's "Indy Style" each Friday morning? Chris is a longtime movie critic and a former A&E editor at the Indianapolis Star. That’s it for this week!
